Harbor House

In 1927, Migdale Castle in the tony New York suburb of Millbrook was completed for Margaret Carnegie Miller, the only child of Andrew Carnegie. It offers unparalleled woodland and Catskill Mountain views; the estate was modeled after Carnegie’s Skibo Castle in Scotland. Today, one of Duchess County’s largest and most well-appointed mansions is now on the market. Love the impact you are making and the relationships you are building with just time, a kitchen and acceptance.

Harbor House sees a world where every person in recovery has access to a supportive, healthy, and safe home environment built on respect, focused on recovery, and lead by peers. Just because we may dump too much cinnamon in an apple turnovers doesn’t mean we aren’t “good enough”; we just let it go and move forward. I want them to feel at ease when trying something new. I don’t want them to be tense with feelings of pressure to do it the “right” way or feel shame if they do it “wrong”.

I am honored to be able to observe their personal development. I see stiff bodies, hunched shoulders, reluctance, doubt and vacant stares, at first. Then I see vulnerability, acquiescence and participation.

Insights from the community

“Yes, I said, I am a recovered bulimic.” How lovely to just be able to share the secret of my past like it was no big deal…so refreshing. Cooking with “my guys” at Harbor House fills me with energy, hope and optimism. Last night we blanched, squeezed and finely chopped six bags of spinach to mix with ricotta, Parmesan and nutmeg.

Some guys come naturally to working with dough, while others are more comfortable with a knife. The next blunt question was “Are you recovered”? I wish the rest of the population was this honest, direct, real and open!
